Unbuilt: Classrooms & Housing for Teachers College (1969)

This complex, designed by Hugh Stubbins, the architect who later did the impressive Citicorp Center in midtown, would have included a library building that bridged over 121st St. It would also have housed both graduate students and poor families, not an idea likely to be considered today, to say the least. Columbia had at one time the idea of surrounding its old central campus with a number of new high-rise complexes in this style. Visible at upper left are Riverside Church and Union Theological Seminary.
