Riverside ChurchThis is Riverside Church, which was built by John D. Rockefeller in the 30's when he was rebuffed from joining the board of our local Cathedral of St. John the Divine due to his not being an Episcopalian. Riverside Church is non-denominationally Protestant and has a steel frame, which enabled it to actually get finished, as opposed to
St. John's, which is still a-building. Its founding minister was the Rev. Harry Fosdick, a champion of non-sectarian Christianity. The design is by Allen & Collens; the great tower is loosely based on the south tower of Chartres cathedral in France.
