Other Riverside Drive Apartment HousesThe best apartments in our neighborhood are on Riverside Drive. The one at left is called the Paterno; that silvery roof really should be green copper, and one of these days it will be properly restored. This building has an enclosed brick circular driveway, stained-glass windows, marble walls and intricate tile-work. In the 1950's, the Paterno and its environs fell victim to suburban flight; much-needed repairs were neglected under a rent-control budget. By the 70's, the boiler and plumbing systems had broken down and paint sagged from the hallway ceilings in shreds. But today, after much rehabilitation, prices range from about $350,000 for a 750-sq.-ft., one-bedroom, one-bath unit with dining room, to over $1.6 million for a 1,700- to 1,900-sq.-ft. unit with two or three bedrooms, a library, a maid’s room and a bathroom, The typical unit of about 1,200-sq.-ft. features two bedrooms, one-and-a-half bathrooms, a dining room, high ceilings and hardwood floors; it sells for $600,000 to $700,000. The building has 102 apartments.
