Low Library Brand New (c. 1900)

This picture of Low Library shows what appears to be a nursery or vegetable garden in the foreground at right. Some of Columbia's other academic buildings are beginning to take shape in the background. This gives some idea of just how rural this area was when Columbia moved here in 1897; it only really developed when the IRT subway opened in 1904.
