Columbia's Alma Mater

This statue was originally supposed to have been gilded, like the statueon top of the Merchant's Gate to Central Park at 59th and Central Park West and some other local monuments. The last time this was tried, in the 60's, it caused an outcry because of the cultural climate of the times. It would, however, look splendid. Fundamentally, the Florentine Renaissance architecture on which Columbia's campus is based is a very bold, not understated, style, and gold is far more authentic.
